Steve and Jo-Ann Barhite had a vision. Each time they drove by the old Krieger Greenhouse north of Iowa Falls, they wondered: What could we do with that building? What kind of pleasant outdoor atmosphere could we create for cold Iowa winters? The vision began to grow.
Opportunities to travel allowed them to take note of what other small towns and villages have to offer. Steve and Jo-Ann were inspired by the open markets and brick streets of historic St. Charles, MO. Both have an appreciation for history, colonial America, and the spirit of the old "general store" where people could "meet and greet." But, what would they call this place? "The Gathering Place" was offered -- and quite naturally stuck. "At the Pine" was attached by Steve in remembrance of the Liberty flag and the spirit of 1776. The Gathering Place at the Pine became what it's name suggests: a place where people can gather for encouragment.
The name of The Gathering Place also explains the gathering of time and talent necessary for such a vision to be reality. The building was restored by Steve and each brick in the courtyard was laid with care by Steve and son, Lance. Jo-Ann met personally with organic producers and marketing specialists. She works with staff in the kitchen and out on the floor. Jo-Ann values the importance of shop owners being "on site" to greet customers and answer questions. Family members also contribute to the "vision." There's a lot that happens at The Gathering Place. A "village under one roof" requires the teamwork of family and the excitement of employees.
The Gathering Place at the Pine opened its doors in the spring of 2012. The "old" greenhouse was quickly put to good use. By summer, news of The Gathering Place was getting out. Small groups were calling for lunch reservations or to book an evening event. Guests for lunch or an evening hors d'oeuvre party have included veterans of the U.S. Air Force, teachers, family groups, garden club, Christian ministries, and business and professional groups. On special occasions, The Gathering Place features a local musical artist.
The vision continues to expand. Steve and Jo-Ann admit to learning "on the go." They are grateful for the creativity and help of family as well as the relationships formed with employees and customers. The village atmosphere invites local people and travelers alike.
Won't you come "gather" with us?
